Finding a stronghold with two Eye of Ender throws
Triangulation works with two throws, not six eyes of guesswork. Here is the technique, the two mistakes that make it fail, and the coordinate maths behind it.
Throwing eyes and running after them wastes eyes and time. Two throws from the right positions give you the stronghold's coordinates directly.
The method
- Stand anywhere. Throw an eye. Before it lands, press F3 and record your
coordinates x1 z1 and your facing angle f.
- Walk perpendicular to that direction — a few hundred blocks is plenty.
- Throw a second eye. Record
x2 z2and the new angle. - The two lines cross at the stronghold.
The angle is the Facing line in the F3 debug screen. Look directly at the eye as it flies and read the yaw at that moment.
The maths
Minecraft yaw is measured so that 0 is south (+Z) and it increases clockwise. Convert each throw to a direction vector:
dx = -sin(yaw) dz = cos(yaw)
Then solve the intersection of the two rays. The result is the stronghold's approximate centre — usually within a chunk or two, which is close enough to find the staircase.
The two mistakes
Throwing both eyes from the same line. If your second throw is roughly along the same bearing as the first, the two lines are nearly parallel and the intersection is wildly wrong — often thousands of blocks off. Move perpendicular, not forward. This is the single biggest error source, and it is why "triangulation does not work for me" is usually two throws 20 blocks apart in a straight line.
Reading the angle after the eye lands. The yaw you want is your facing while looking at the eye in flight. Read it late and you have your own turning angle, not the eye's bearing.
Eyes break, and that is fine
An eye has roughly a 1-in-5 chance of shattering on each throw. Two throws is the minimum; budget four eyes. Since triangulation only needs two, you keep the rest for the portal — which needs up to twelve frames filled, though a generated portal usually starts with some already in place.
Strongholds generate in rings
They are not scattered randomly. The first ring is 1,280–2,816 blocks from origin and holds three strongholds; further rings hold more, spaced around the world centre. So if your triangulation points somewhere under 1,000 blocks from spawn, the arithmetic is wrong rather than the world being unusual.
Bedrock differs
Bedrock strongholds generate on a different pattern and eyes behave slightly differently. The triangulation technique still works; the ring distances do not transfer.
