A Shulker Box Holds Exactly One Stack of Stacks

Sixty-four stacks fit in a shulker box, so a full double chest is a fraction of one — and redstone timing has a matching trap.

A shulker box holds 27 slots, and a slot holds one stack, so a full box is 27 stacks — a fact most players get right and then immediately misuse when they try to convert a chest of cobblestone into boxes.

Stacks, chests, boxes

The conversion chain is pure multiplication, which is why it is easy to do in your head and easy to do wrong:

ContainerSlotsStacks held
Shulker box2727
Single chest2727
Double chest5454

A double chest therefore equals two shulker boxes exactly, not "about two." If you are hauling a double chest of stone, you need two boxes and nothing left over — but only if every slot is a full stack of a stackable item.

Where the count breaks

Stack size is per item, and the calculator's whole job is refusing to assume 64. A slot of ender pearls holds 16, a slot of buckets holds one. Fill a shulker box with unstackable items and it holds 27 items, not 27 stacks. The box does not care; your arithmetic does.

This is the same trap that catches comparator sorting: a container full of buckets reads as full while holding almost nothing.

Redstone ticks are not game ticks

Timing is the other half of the tool. Redstone runs on its own clock:

1 redstone tick = 2 game ticks
1 game tick = 1/20 second

So a repeater set to one tick delays the signal by 2 game ticks, or a tenth of a second. A four-tick repeater is 8 game ticks. Chain enough of them and the delay is audible before it is visible.

Pistons, observers and comparators each respond on their own schedule, and mixing them produces the off-by-one errors that make a door fire twice.

Java and Bedrock diverge

The tick ratio above is the same on both editions, but redstone behaviour is not. Quasi-connectivity, the mechanic that lets a piston be powered by a block two spaces away, exists on Java and not on Bedrock. Zero-tick pulses and the exact update order of adjacent components also differ. A circuit that is one tick too fast on Java may simply not run on Bedrock.

Working in the other direction

Going from items to boxes is division with a remainder, and the remainder is what wastes your inventory. 27 stacks per box means a partial box is usually the real answer, not a rounded-up one.

Turn an item count into stacks, chests and shulker boxes — and convert a circuit's delay between game ticks, redstone ticks and seconds — with the Stack & Redstone Calculators.
