Hanging a painting is a lottery until you know the size distribution, because Minecraft picks randomly from every painting that FITS the space you gave it. Shape the space and you shape the odds. Counted from Mojang's shipped painting files for 26.2, the same data the browser on this page reads.

Square dominates, portrait barely exists
- 34 are square (1×1, 2×2, 3×3, 4×4)
- 12 are wider than tall
- 5 are taller than wide
That last number is the useful one. Two thirds of the catalogue is square, and true portrait paintings are rare: three at 1×2 and two at 3×4, and that is the entire list.
So a 1-wide, 2-tall gap can only ever produce three possible paintings — the odds are better than they feel — while a 2×2 recess is the worst possible choice if you are hunting for a specific piece, because twelve candidates compete for it.
How to actually get the painting you want
The mechanic is that Minecraft picks uniformly at random from every painting that fits, and "fits" means the space is at least that size. So:
- Build the exact frame. A 4×4 wall with solid blocks around it can only hold the five 4×4
paintings, because nothing larger exists.
- 1×1 is the worst odds in the game — eight candidates and the smallest footprint.
- The rare shapes are the reliable ones. If you want
pigscene, build 4×4 and you are choosing
between five; if you want a 1×2, you are choosing between three.
Five paintings credit no artist
Every painting carries an author string except five: earth, fire, water, wind and wither.
The other 46 name their artist. That split is not decorative — it tracks the paintings that were never part of the original hand-painted set, and it is why they look stylistically apart from the rest.
