Gold is the fastest tool in Minecraft, and netherite is only 12% faster than diamond

Tool speed multipliers run 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 — and gold sits at 12, above netherite. The upgrade you grind for is the smallest step on the ladder.

Mining speed and mining tier are two different numbers, and people conflate them constantly. These are the multipliers the calculator on this page uses, which are Minecraft's own.

The speed ladder is not the tier ladder

Two things fall out immediately.

Gold is the fastest tool in the game. At 12 it is a third faster than netherite's 9 and twelve times faster than bare hands. And it shares tier rank 1 with wood, so it cannot mine iron ore, gold ore, diamond, redstone or anything above the stone tier — the things it is fast at are the things a wooden pickaxe could already mine.

That is the whole character of gold: enormous speed on the bottom of the tier ladder. For clearing stone, digging out a build, or stripping a large volume of low-tier blocks it is the best tool in the game and it always has been.

Netherite is the smallest step on the ladder. Diamond 8 → netherite 9 is +12.5%, against stone → iron at +50% and iron → diamond at +33%. Every earlier upgrade is a bigger jump than the last one, which is the opposite of how the progression feels.

What netherite actually buys

Since the earlier guide on tool tiers showed that incorrect_for_netherite_tool is empty and so is incorrect_for_diamond_tool, netherite unlocks no block diamond cannot already mine. Pair that with +12.5% speed and the honest summary is:

  • durability
  • lava immunity for the dropped item
  • knockback resistance on armour
  • 12.5% mining speed

If you are deciding whether the ancient debris hunt is worth it, that is the list. It is not a mining-access decision and it is barely a mining-speed one.

Where gold is genuinely the right pick

  • Bulk clearing of stone, dirt, sand and wood. Nothing beats 12.
  • A Silk Touch or Fortune tool for low-tier blocks, where the speed compounds over

thousands of blocks.

  • Never for ore runs. It cannot mine iron, gold, redstone, diamond or emerald ore at all —

the block breaks and drops nothing.

The durability is the catch: gold has the lowest of any material, so the speed is rented rather than owned. Unbreaking changes that maths more for gold than for anything else.

Reading the calculator

Speed multiplier is only the first term. The tool on this page also applies Efficiency, Haste, Mining Fatigue, whether you are in water, and whether you are on the ground — each of which is a multiplier or a divisor on top of the number above. The tier is a separate yes/no gate that happens before any of it: fail the tier and speed is irrelevant, because the block drops nothing no matter how fast it breaks.
