Brewing covers 19 of 40 effects — and four potions are not named after what they do
21 status effects cannot be brewed. Swiftness gives Speed, Leaping gives Jump Boost, Healing gives Instant Health — and /give and /effect need the different names.
The brewing stand covers less than half the status effects in the game, and four of the potions it does make are named after something other than the effect they grant. That second fact is a command-writing trap. Counted from Mojang's shipped potion and effect registries for 26.3.
19 brewable effects, 46 entries
There are 46 potion entries:
- 24 base potions — 19 that brew into an effect, four that grant nothing (
water, mundane, thick, awkward) andluck, which exists but has no brewing recipe - 13
long_extended versions - 9
strong_amplified versions
Not every potion has both. Night Vision extends but does not amplify; Healing amplifies but does not extend. The 13-and-9 split is why.
21 of the 40 effects cannot be brewed
Just over half the status effects in the game cannot be brewed at all:
absorption, bad_omen, blindness, breath_of_the_nautilus, conduit_power, darkness, dolphins_grace, glowing, haste, health_boost, hero_of_the_village, hunger, levitation, luck, mining_fatigue, nausea, raid_omen, saturation, trial_omen, unluck, wither
Some are environmental (Conduit Power, Dolphin's Grace, Darkness), some are event flags (Bad Omen, Raid Omen, Trial Omen, Hero of the Village), some come from something other than a brewing stand (Glowing from spectral arrows, Levitation from shulkers, Haste from a beacon), and Luck has a potion id but no recipe, so commands are its only route. No amount of brewing will produce any of them.
Four potions are named after something else
| potion id | effect it grants |
|---|---|
swiftness | speed |
leaping | jump_boost |
healing | instant_health |
harming | instant_damage |
This matters because the two commands take different vocabularies:
/give @p potion[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:swiftness"}]
/effect give @p minecraft:speed 30 1
potion:"minecraft:speed" is not a thing and /effect give @p minecraft:swiftness is not either. Each command wants its own id, and among single-effect potions the mismatch only exists for these four — every other one shares its name with its effect, which is exactly what makes the four easy to get wrong.
Turtle Master grants two effects
turtle_master is the only potion that applies more than one: Resistance and Slowness together. That is why it reads as a defensive potion with a drawback rather than a straight buff.
It is also the only way to brew Resistance. There is no Potion of Resistance — the effect is reachable through the brewing stand only as half of Turtle Master, always with the Slowness attached. So Resistance is not in the unbrewable list above, but it is not separable either.
For command and datapack work
- Check whether the effect you want even has a potion before designing around brewing — 21 cannot be brewed.
- Use the potion id for items and the effect id for
/effect; they differ for Swiftness, Leaping, Healing and Harming. - Remember
long_andstrong_are separate registry entries, not modifiers, so a command namingminecraft:long_swiftnessis naming a real, distinct potion.
