How to fly in Minecraft: Creative, elytra, riptide and a happy ghast
Every way to leave the ground in Java 26.3, from the code: elytra flight time, what Unbreaking does to it, rocket boost lengths, riptide and the happy ghast.
"Flying" in Minecraft means four different things, and only one of them is true flight. The rest are gliding, launching and riding. Here is each one, as the Java 26.3 code has it.
Creative and Spectator: real flight
In Creative, double-tap jump to take off and double-tap again to drop. Hold jump to climb, sneak to descend, and sprint to fly at twice the normal flying speed. Spectator mode flies permanently and passes through blocks.
Java has no command or item that lets a player in Survival mode fly like this. The server setting allow-flight does not give it either: all it does is stop the server from kicking players it thinks are flying — which is why servers running flight mods turn it on.
Elytra: gliding, and how long it lasts
Elytra are the only Survival wings, and they are only found in one place: the item frame on an End ship, one pair per ship, beside some End cities. Wear them in the chest slot, jump, and press jump again in mid-air to spread them.
Gliding costs durability on a clock, not per distance: 1 point every 20 ticks (once a second) while you glide, from a total of 432. The game also refuses to open elytra that are one hit from breaking, so the last point is never spent:
| elytra | gliding time before they stop working |
|---|---|
| plain | 431 seconds — 7 minutes 11 seconds |
| Unbreaking III | about 1,724 seconds — 28.7 minutes on average |
| Mending | as long as you keep collecting experience |
Unbreaking helps elytra four times over rather than the 30% armour gets, because elytra are not in the #minecraft:enchantable/armor tag: they take the tool formula, where Unbreaking III skips three of every four durability hits. Repair them with phantom membranes in an anvil.
Rockets: the engine
Gliding only loses height. Firework rockets used while gliding push you forward. The recipe is paper plus 1 to 3 gunpowder, making three rockets, and the gunpowder count is the flight duration. The boost lasts as long as the rocket lives:
| gunpowder (flight duration) | rocket lifetime |
|---|---|
| 1 | 20–31 ticks |
| 2 | 30–41 ticks |
| 3 | 40–51 ticks |
That is 10 × (duration + 1) plus two random rolls of 0–5 and 0–6 ticks. Leave out firework stars: a rocket with a star explodes at the end of its flight, next to you.
Riptide: launching, only when wet
A trident with Riptide throws you instead of the trident — but only while you are in water or standing in rain, and never while riding. The launch speed is the enchantment's trident_spin_attack_strength: 1.5 at level I, 2.25 at II and 3.0 at III.
Happy ghast: riding something that flies
Since the happy ghast arrived, you can fly in Survival on a mob:
- Craft a dried ghast: 8 ghast tears around a block of soul sand.
- Place it in water. It rehydrates in four 5,000-tick steps — about 17 minutes — and a ghastling hatches.
- The ghastling is a baby for 20 minutes; snowballs are its food and speed that up.
- Put a harness on the adult: 3 leather, 2 glass and 1 wool, any colour.
A harnessed happy ghast carries up to four players, with the one in front steering.
Everything else lifts, but you do not steer
Levitation — from a shulker's bullet — lifts you with no control over direction. Wind charges launch you upward when they burst at your feet, and landing on a slime block bounces you back. All three get you off the ground; none of them is flying.
