How to fix “Multiplayer is disabled” in Minecraft Java Edition
The greyed-out Multiplayer button has four possible messages in the 26.3 code, and only one is a setting you can change. What each means, and the fix.
When Java Edition's title screen shows the Multiplayer and Minecraft Realms buttons greyed out, hovering over either one gives the reason. There are four possible reasons in the 26.3 client, checked in this order:

Only the last one is something you can switch back on yourself. The first three come from Minecraft's account services: a name change is fixed by changing the profile name, and a suspension has to run out or be appealed.
What "check your Microsoft account settings" means
The game does not decide this itself. When it starts, it downloads your account's properties from Minecraft's services, and one of them is whether you may join servers. If that flag is off, the button is disabled. It is controlled by your Xbox privacy settings, even if you have never owned an Xbox. Mojang's parental-controls page gives the path:
- Go to
account.xbox.com/settingsand sign in with the Microsoft account you play on. - Pick the account, then open Online Safety.
- Set "You can join multiplayer games" to Allow. For Realms, also allow "You can create and join clubs".
- Save, then fully close the Minecraft Launcher and start it again. The game only reads these properties at startup, so a running game keeps the old answer.
Child accounts: only a parent can change it
Mojang treats accounts under 16 in the US and EU (19 in South Korea) as child accounts, and only a parent account can change their settings. The child cannot switch multiplayer on — the parent does it from the same Xbox settings page, choosing the child's account in step 2.
If the account is fine
Two things can switch multiplayer off without any account problem:
- A launch option. The client accepts a
--disableMultiplayerstart-up argument, and if anything adds it to the installation's arguments, multiplayer is off whatever the account says. - Demo mode. An account that does not own Java Edition starts the demo, whose title screen has no multiplayer buttons at all — just Play Demo World and Reset Demo World.
Chat is a separate switch. "Chat is not allowed by account settings" comes from a different account property and does not stop you joining servers; it is changed on the same privacy page.
Once the buttons are back and a particular server still will not connect, the problem has moved from your account to the server. The Server Diagnostics tool checks whether a Java server is up and answering, and reads a crash log if it is not.
